COLDEST GAME EVER FOR ATHLETICS
IN 5-0 LOSS Non-Conference Tune-Up Game Reaches New Lows, Temperature-Wise 050111
A predicted 47 degree day never materialized for Lakeville's opening day game against non-conference opponent Bay City, Wisconsin, as the Athletics and Bombers called it a day after only 7 innings. With a 35 degree game-time temp, and 25 degree wind chill, the two teams began to rethink their rationale for lacing up the spikes on a miserable Sunday afternoon for both teams. It was doubly miserable for Lakeville as their bats were also cold, mustering just five hits on the afternoon in a season opening tune-up for the veterans and newcomers. The team was without half of its roster as the college players have yet to report from their own NCAA seasons, but there was still a crisp exuberance as old familiar faces met in the dugout once again, joking together about the less than ideal baseball conditions. Neither team was long on pitching, and both wished to avoid any season opening injuries due to the cold, so the game was called in mutual agreement after only 7 innings.
Trent Larson started on the hill for the Athletics, but was held to just three innings of work, typical for an opening day assignment. Larson had a 1-2-3 1st inning, before yielding two hits in the 2nd, surrendering three runs with help from a defensive error and one hit by pitch. A lead-off walk and subsequent double in the 3rd was all the offense that Bay City would need in scoring a lone run to make the score 3-0. Right fielder John Degerness gathered Lakeville's first hit in the bottom of the 2nd with a bloop single that dropped behind the 1st base bag, just out of reach of a scrambling Bay City infield.
The Athletics' second hit came in the 3rd off a single to left from 3rd baseman Brent Johnson. Mark Berger came on to pitch in the 4th and 5th, allowing just two hits while striking out three and walking one, surrendering one run in his trip to the rubber Newcomer and catcher Kevin George picked up Lakeville's third hit on a broken bat single between shortstop and 2nd base in the bottom of the 5th inning. After an inning opening strikeout to lead off the 6th, new shortstop Eddie Golom came to the plate and stroked a hit to the left of 2nd base. Trent Larson then hit into a fielder's choice with a shot to the shortstop, forcing Golom at 2nd, before 1st baseman Josh Storm hit a single down the 3rd base line to give Lakeville runners at 1st and 2nd. Veteran Mark Berger then reached on an error by the shortstop to load the bags for Lakeville, but an ensuing third out left the bases full with no runs to show for the Athletics' efforts. A side-arming John Degerness pitched the 6th and 7th for Lakeville, giving up two hits while striking out two. A fly-out, strikeout and groundout ended Lakeville's chances in the 7th as the game was called early due to the extremely cold weather conditions and both teams opening day lack of pitching depth.
Defensive webs gems came from 3rd baseman Brent Johnson on the first play of the game, robbing the Bombers of a hit with a diving stab of a scorched line drive to his left. Newcomer Mike Grazzini also made a nice catch after retreating with his back to the fence. New shortstop and Notre Dame alum Eddie Golom made a terrific throw to 1st baseman Josh Storm who made a great catch and tag to get a Bay City runner who rounded 1st base too far, but the umpire blew the call, signaling safe on a sure out. Centerfielder Mark Berger made a nice catch "falling with style" in the 6th inning. Collecting hits for Lakeville were:
The Bay City Bombers out-hit the Lakeville Athletics 7-5 on the afternoon.
The Athletics next game will be at
