TOSSES SIX SCORELESS WITH 7 STRIKEOUTS
Offense Cranks Out 12 Hits, Three Doubles In Rout of
Westside Bombers

All-star ace Jake Hauck was
nails on the mound, tossing 6-inning shutout baseball.
It was a day long overdue as
the Athletics put it all together on Sunday in a game where it
seemed nothing could go wrong. Pitching, defense and offense
all came together as Lakeville notched its first win in
dominant fashion over the Westside Bombers from Eden Prairie.
Team ace and all-star veteran
Jake Hauck dazzled on the mound, pitching six complete shutout
innings, never facing more than four batters in an inning. He
had two 1-2-3 innings as well. He struck out seven against
just one walk. Only three Bombers out of the 22 he faced
managed to reach scoring position, with none of them ever
reaching home. Hauck threw 83 pitches total in the effort,
dominating from the first hitter to the last as he picked up
his first win on the season.
The Athletics got on the board
early. Shortstop Max Shower reached on an error from his
Westside counterpart, then alertly took 2nd base on a dropped
ball by the catcher. He then got a huge jump on the pitcher
and easily stole 3rd by the time the ball reached home plate.
A fly-out later, first baseman Josh Storm hit a looping single
over 3rd which dropped fair, scoring Shower on the hit. A U6-3
double play ended the inning, but with Lakeville leading 1-0.

Derek Hahn rips a double in the
2nd inning. Hahn had two hits on the day.
Catcher Derek Hahn led off the
2nd by smoking a double down the right field line.
Centerfielder Mark Berger reached on a throwing error by the
3rd baseman, then took second on the overthrow, with Hahn
moving to 3rd. Right fielder Jeff Farr also reached on
an error when he dropped a ball behind 1st that was misplayed,
scoring Hahn and moving Berger to 3rd. Left fielder Eric Watts
stroked a hard hit ball to left for a sac-fly, scoring Berger
from 3rd. Second baseman Justin Hahn was hit by a pitch,
followed by Shower who promptly walked to load the bases.

"It's clobberin' time." Eddie
Golom bruises a baseball for a 3 RBI double in the 2nd inning.
Third baseman Eddie Golom came
to the plate and mauled an 0-1 pitch with a bases clearing
double to the left field fence. Storm came to the plate and
took a wild pitch which sent Golom to 3rd. Storm then walked
to give Lakeville runners at the corners. Designated Hitter
Kevin George pounded a single to right to score Golom. A line
out-and groundout ended the six run outburst, an inning which
saw eleven Athletics batters at the plate, giving them a
commanding 7-0 lead.

Max Shower led off the 4th with
the first of two hits on the day. Eddie Golom reached on a
throwing error by the shortstop, taking 2nd base on the throw
with Shower moving to 3rd. Kevin George drilled a sac-fly to
right to score Shower. Derek Hahn then picked up his second
hit of the day with a single to right. Mark Berger damn near
dismembered the pitcher with a lined scorcher back through the
middle which the pitcher caught after sticking his glove up in
self defense. The Athletics held an 8-0 lead at that point.
After a scoreless 5th and 6th,
John Degerness came on in relief of Hauck, pitching the 7th
and 8th innings. He scattered three hits and allowed one run
as Westside finally got on the board in the top of the 8th to
break up the shut out, making the score 8-1.

Eric Watts pops up and dusts
himself off after a hit and a stolen base in the 5th inning.
Lakeville came right back in
the bottom of the 8th. Substitute 1st baseman Collin Baker
blasted a double off the left field fence for a lead-off
double. One out later, Derek Hahn reached on an error by the
1st baseman. Mark Berger stepped to the plate and watched a
passed ball scoot under the catcher, moving Baker to 3rd and
Hahn to 2nd. Berger then smoked a hard hit ball to center
field and was robbed of an extra base hit on a terrific diving
catch, but it was deep enough for the sac-fly, scoring Baker
on the play. Jeff Farr followed with a hit to right field, but
a subsequent strike out ended the scoring with Lakeville
leading at that point in the game 9-1.
Baker then took to the mound in
relief. He struck out the first batter looking, then gave up a
chopper over Golom for a hit. He got the next batter on a 6-3
groundout before walking the number eight hitter. He then
struck out the nine hitter on four pitches, with Lakeville
taking their first win of the season.

Collin Baker closes out the game
in the top of the 9th inning.
The Athletics out-hit the
Bombers 12 to 7 on the afternoon.
Defensive plays of the game
were really on the Westside end of play, despite the lopsided
score. They made at least three spectacular web gems of their
own, however, Max Shower made a number of nice defensive plays
for Lakeville at short, including a 6-3 putout in the 7th
where he ranged into 2nd base territory to make the scoop and
throw. Third baseman Eddie Golom also played well at the hot
corner, particularly in turning a quick force at 2nd in the
8th inning. Pitcher Jake Hauck also fielded his position
extremely well with three 1-3 put-outs in the game.
Collecting hits for the
Athletics were...
- Max Shower 2 for 4, 3 R, OBE,
SB
- Derek Hahn 2 for 5, 2B, R,
OBE
- Jeff Farr 2 for 5, RBI, R,
OBE
- Eddie Golom 1 for 5, 2B, 3
RBI, R, OBE
- Kevin George 1 for 3, 2 RBI,
Sac-Fly, FC
- Justin Hahn 1 for 3, R, HBP
- Eric Watts 1 for 4, RBI, SB,
Sac-Fly
- Josh Storm 1 for 2, RBI, BB
- Collin Baker 1 for 1, 2B, R,
HBP
Lakeville is now 1-5 on the
season overall, and 0-2 in league play.
The Athletics next game is on the road as
they travel to Rochester on Wednesday night for a 7:30 game at Mayo
Field. |
