A loss is always tough to take,
but Saturday's game at Rosemount was an extremely tough game
to lose. Off-speed pitching seemed to stifle and frustrate the
Athletics bats as they struggled to sit back and hit the ball
square.
Jeff Farr pitched well against the
Black Sox, despite the heat, turning in a complete game with
eight strong innings and 112 pitches thrown. Farr limited
Rosemount to just three hits through six innings before tiring
and allowing two in the 7th and three in the 8th. Farr
scattered eight hits with five runs, but two of the runs were
unearned as he ended up taking a hard loss for his efforts. It
was a game that easily could have been his to win if only he
had received some offensive support.
Lakeville led early on in the
game, leading 1-0 for 3 1/2 innings.

Shortstop Eddie Golom led off the
game with a hard hit single to left. Second baseman Justin
Hahn walked before 1st baseman Josh Storm deposited a ball
into left-center for an RBI single to score Golom. An ensuing fly-out, plus a
4-6-3 double-play ended the inning, but with Lakeville holding
an early one run lead.

The Athletics were held hitless
from that point on until the 6th inning, but Rosemount tied
the game up at one each with two walks, a sac bunt and a wild
pitch.

Both teams were scoreless in the
5th and 6th innings, with the game remaining tied at 1-1.
A walk from pitcher Farr was the
only offense that Lakeville could muster in the 7th, but
Rosemount picked up two unearned runs on a fielding error that
would have been the third out of the inning. The Black Sox led
at that point 3-1.

The Athletics tried for a comeback
in the 8th. Left fielder Eric Watts stroked a single to left.
Eddie Golom walked before 2nd baseman Justin Hahn laid down a
beautiful sac bunt, moving Watts to 3rd and Golom to 2nd, with
a chance to tie the game up with two runners in scoring
position. First baseman Josh Storm hit a comeback to the
mound, whereupon the pitcher checked Watts at 3rd and then got
Storm at 1st for the 2nd out. Golom kept coming on the play
and ended up at 3rd with Watts. Golom then tried to retreat
back to second, but the 1st baseman cut him off with a throw
to the shortstop. Watts tried to break for home on the play,
but a good throw from the shortstop nailed him at the plate,
ending the inning for Lakeville.

Rosemount put up two insurance
runs in the bottom of the 8th and then set the Athletics down
1-2-3 in the 9th to hold on for the 5-1 win.
Defensive highlights of the
game... Jeff Farr picked off yet another runner with a 1-3-4-3
rundown in the 1st inning. Kevin George made a nice catch in
shallow center in the 2nd. Shortstop Eddie Golom made a great
play from deep in the hole in the 7th. Third baseman Brent
Johnson charged a slow roller to the left of the mound in the
8th, making a quick throw to get the out.
